I decided to create a character named, Typolina. She has a typewriter head and pear-shaped body type. She was on holiday in South Africa and visited a lot of different places. These illustrations are a visual representation of her journey.
I drew inspiration from my work completed during the previous exercises and incorporated them into these illustrations.
I created the characters’ outfits using African fabric prints that I used in a Exercise 2.5.
My Mom kept one of my dresses from when I was little. The style and fabric inspired the design of my characters’ outfits:
I created the background layouts using collage, incorporating sketches from Exercise 2.0; the concept of using objects from Exercise 2.5, incorporating tickets/ brochures/ etc. which I collected during the recent weeks; as well as a sea shell mandala from a research task.
I decided to create the sun/ moon using screenshots of google maps, showing where each destination is on the map.
I also made the character a little travel journal with photographs; tickets; brochures collected on her trip. I added little notes of ‘diary entries’ made by the character, Typolina.
Although I am pleased with the way these illustrations came out, I think I should’ve adjusted the size of the character to fit the background layouts better.
