I love the idea of mermaids and would like to think that they’re magical creatures.
Although I do think that they really exist or existed, I don’t think they look anything like the general visual representation of a mermaid we’re used to. I think in reality, they might be more slimy and ugly creatures that live in the deep dark sea. It’s impossible to believe that they feature in old art pieces and stories from so many different cultures who were far apart, without having some truth to it.
As I love the more magical idea of mermaids, I decided to create some illustrations about their everyday life. I started out with a little doodle of myself as a mermaid with the phrase, “Life is getting too complicated, time to be a mermaid”. I then added a pattern of mermaids on a printed photograph of clouds. The following illustrations are examples of my representation of their everyday life. They’re drawn using micron pen and Koi colouring brush pens. I used print-outs of previously taken photographs as ocean background.
I added speech bubbles with funny phrases, to take pictures of it. I did not glue it on, as I might think of different phrases in the future.
I enjoyed drawing these and I might add to the collection in the future 🙂
