I discovered the sketchbooks of Frances Pickering on Pinterest and was amazed by her beautiful work combining embroidery with her sketchbook entries. It inspired me to try it out myself. I decided to use black- and white photographs of 2 of the artists’ whose sketchbooks I’ve looked at previously, Frida Kahlo and Sonia Delaunay. I was excited to try adding hand-stitching to my sketchbooks.
THE PROCESS:
I printed off black-and white photographs of Frida Kahlo and Sonia Delaunay. I cut a frame out of cardboard and used washi tape to attach the pictures to it. I used needle and thread to add some embroidery details to the pictures.
I decorated the backgrounds with stripes and flowers using acrylic paint.

REFLECTION:
Although I was excited to try it, it was quite a challenge embroidering on paper. It kept tearing and I had to keep patching it up by using thread over the tears. If I try this again in the future, I would have to try a different type of paper that won’t tear as easily.
